High School Locks Down For Gun Threat (Fox 12 Oregon)

LONGVIEW, Wash. -- R.A. Long High School went into lockdown mode for about 40 minutes while officers investigated reports of guns in the area, school officials said.

Beyond safety and the gun, another piece of paintball gear that is a must-have is a device for actually carrying the balls. Most players purchase a special carrying belt that holds tubes that can be filled with paintballs. The tubes generally hold 200 paint balls each. Style of play will determine how many balls need to be carried.

Aside from the marker and balls, the most important purchases on the paintball gear market fall in the safety category. Remember, safety and comfort are far more important on the field of play than looks.

Other paintball gear some players purchase includes optional safety equipment. If the sting of being hit by a ball is too much, there are hard plastic pieces of body armor that can help protected the back, chest, arms and legs. These aren't required to play, but many players use them.

All of the markers mentioned above do carry a hefty price tag, but there are alternatives, including the Ion by Smart Parts. This gun costs about half the price of the others and can hold its own when used by a good player.

Depending on what type of game you play will most likely determine the weapon you choose, such as if you're a wood ball player you might be more inclined go with a Tippman these markers are known for their durability and reliability.

To buy a mask correctly, it is important to make sure it fits securely. It doesn't matter what it looks like, dont forget that! If a mask doesn't fit right, it is not the right piece of gear.

Those that plan to play mostly on air ball or speedball fields will need a marker that fires at least 15 balls a second. Any number of guns fit this description. Examples include the Ego made by Planet Eclipse, a Dmc or a Dm6 made by Dye perhaps even a Karnivor made by Worrgames. Some of these guns are what might be considered by some to be "top of the line."

After a marker is chosen, the next piece of paintball gear that will be needed is a mask. There are all kinds of makes to choose from. They come in all sorts of colors and some even have tinted, or colored, lenses. But as cool as some may look, always remember that a mask's number one just is to protect the face and especially the eyes. Safety is the first concern of this type of paintball gear.

What Paintball Gear Do Players Need?

The first piece of paintball gear any player will need is a marker or gun. The type of game that will be played will most likely determine the weapon chosen.

Never point your BB gun at anyone. It does not matter if it is not loaded!

As stated above, in the A Christmas Story incident, always where protective eyewear. Also wear a protective mask.

Realize that BBs can ricochet. Be aware of the type of surface you are shooting at. BBs ricochet more easily off of certain surfaces. Flat surfaces, hard surfaces, and the water all surfaces that BBs may ricochet off of. Also make sure that the target is not at an angle.

Check out both local and federal laws and regulations. Different states have different BB gun safety laws and rules. Certain guns are not allowed in certain places.

Start out shooting at a shooting range. It is a good and much safer place to learn how to shoot.

Do not allow minors (persons under 18 years of age) to shoot any type of gun (not even a BB gun) with out active adult supervision.

Anyhow, movies aside, BB gun safety truly is extremely important. Many people do not realize how easy it is to injure someone (or even potentially kill someone) with a BB gun. The same gun safety rules must be followed when using BB guns as when using any other type of gun.

Keep your finger off of the trigger until you are ready to fire.

Do not alter the color of your BB gun. If it has a fluorescent orange tip, that is for a reason! Policeman have been known to shoot and fire upon children who have removed the safety orange color form their guns, because the policemen could no longer recognize the guns as anything but real guns.

Keep care of your gun. A damaged or dirty gun is more likely to cause injury.

It is not recommended that children under the age of 16 are allowed to operate a high velocity BB gun. Take a look at the velocity type of your BB gun or air rifle before using. The warning will likely say, May be dangerous up to 350 yards, as well as other warnings. Be sure to follow all warnings.

Does no one remember that he did, indeed, practically shoot his eye out with his Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle? Of course, if he had followed basic BB gun safety rules, he would have been fine. Had he been wearing protective eyewear, instead of just his glasses, he would have been much better off. Had he not shot at a surface with such potential for ricochet well, you get the point.

One rule of BB gun safety that is too often overlooked is that you should always use new ammo in your BB gun. It does not matter if it is expensive. Not doing so is dangerous and can degrade your gun more quickly.

BB gun safety is extremely important. You have probably been told more than once that BB guns are not toys. And yet, many people still treat them as such. Has no one seen the ill-fated scene in the movie A Christmas Story when Ralphie fails to heed the warning of Youll shoot your eye out?

BB Gun Safety Tips

Do not carry a loaded BB gun when climbing over fences or up trees or even when jumping. Doing so could cause the gun to go off.

Treat all guns as though they are loaded. Never assume that a gun is not loaded.

Here are some of the most important BB gun safety rules:

This is especially important if you are training your child on a BB gun before you allow he or she to shoot a real gun. Make sure they learn BB gun safety, and subsequently basic gun safety, right off the bat.

Be sure to follow these rules of BB gun safety. Also, teach BB gun safety to anyone that you see who is not properly following these important rules!

Now that BB guns are made to look more and more realistic, some people can mistake them for real guns. This makes them potentially dangerous! If someone (including and especially a policeman) thinks you have a real gun, he or she may act differently around you. You could be putting yourself and others in danger. Do not carry your BB gun in a public place. Doing so may actually be illegal in your state.

Always check to make sure the gun is not loaded. Point the gun away from people and animals and squeeze the trigger (again, avoid pointing it at things that it might ricochet off of.

In the Electro-pneumatic firing system, electrical power from an onboard battery is used to drive a motor that turns gears inside the gun to compress and release a piston, which creates a blast of air that propels the paintball. These guns are capable of multiple firing modes, such as three-shot bursts, six-shot bursts or fully automatic. Most of them are capable of firing 300 to 900 rounds per minute (RPM) and their muzzle velocities range from 200 to 400 feet per second (FPS).

A paintball gun is a device, or a replica of an actual firearm used to mark an opposing player with paint in the popular game of paintball. It uses different types of propellants such as expanding gases to propel a paintball through a barrel with a muzzle velocity of approximately 300 ft/s to break upon impact.

In mechanical or spring-powered firing system, the paintball guns are mostly single-shot or spring-cocked devices the spring has to be cocked by pulling back the slide or bolt before firing each shot. In some devices, excess air not used to propel the ball is then used to re-cock the hammer which is known as a blowback system. Mechanical paintball guns are able to fire at a rate of 200 to 275 FPS.

Paintball Guns Examined

Types of paintball Guns:

Specially configured paintball guns such as stock guns can only hold about 10 paintballs, and must be parallel to the breech, which requires tilting to load a paintball. A stock class paintball gun is powered by a single 12 gram CO2 powerlet. The knob that holds the powerlet has to be removed in order to change it. They are mostly used for stock only games. Regular pump paintball guns can also be modified to fit stock class specifications.

Firing Systems in Paintball Guns:

Gas-powered firing systems use pressurized gases like propane and HFC134a refrigerant to propel paintballs. They are also capable of using blowback mechanism, in which on-board or magazine-stored gas storage system is used to propel the paintballs and the same compressed air that propels the paintball is used to pull back the slide. So they are also capable of automatic or semi-automatic fire.

With pump guns, the user has to manually load the paintballs into the chamber, they cannot be automatic. They are much cheaper, very accurate and powerful in comparison to other paintball guns. Some of them come with a constant trigger so you can hold the trigger down and just pump it to shoot.

Semi-automatic paintball guns are quite expensive and may even cost you up to a $1000. They are capable of semi-automatic and automatic fire. The trigger is considerably sensitive and most models have shorter trigger pulls.

While the game or sport of paintball is familiar to most people, many have never played the game and don't know what it really is, other than people running around shooting each other with globs of paint. But paintball is so much more than that, and is great fun as well.

Paintball - The Excursion Of A Lifetime

The game of paintball was first introduced to the American market in the mid 1970's. The game was first called 'Survival' and the first article about the game appeared in a 1980 issue of Sports Illustrated. Since then, the popularity of the game has steadily increased until it's reached the worldwide popularity it enjoys today. Whether you participate in the game or sport of paintball as a player or as an observer, one thing is certain. Paintball is a blast, and is here to stay!

A game of paintball is played in a special location with plenty of landscape to provide a pretend battlefield for participants that includes trees, obstacles, bunkers and trenches, among many other landscape features. A game of paintball is generally played between teams, though participants can play individually if they want, and if the paintball facility allows for that. Paintball facilities are scattered throughout the United States and around the world, providing hours of fun for those wanting a little more excitement than other more traditional sports. Over ten million people play paintball in the United States alone, and proponents claim that it's safe, fun and a great way for kids and adults to gain the benefits of exercise while enjoying the action and strategy of the sport. Believe it or not, there are rules to playing a game of paintball and breaking them is frowned upon. Sportsmanship is valued in this game, and sore losers generally don't fare well.

The object of a game of paintball is to 'shoot' all the members of the opposing team. Paintball fields are available with both indoor and outdoor settings and cost only about $10-$80 a day if equipment is rented. For those who choose to purchase their own paintball gear, including paintball 'gun', tanks, and protective headgear and clothing, prices range from about $100-$1,000 depending on what you want. However, depending on your skill level, a game of paintball can last minutes or hours, so you may opt for renting the equipment until you get better at the game. Paintball equipment can be purchased at most sporting goods stores, or online through a paintball supply outfit.
